About
From its haunting opening track, which salutes the recently deceased Nick Drake, there's something unearthly about this 1973 cult classic. Though based in English folk, singer/guitarist Martyn had a foot in jazz and another in psychedelia, and a voice at once gruff and tender. He applies plenty of synth and echo to a spacey take on Skip James' "I'd Rather Be the Devil." Yet his music remained accessible: friendly sentiments and an elegant tune made "May You Never" his best-known song via Eric Clapton's cover.
