About

As their band name implies, The Stargazer Lilies perform bucolic space music where layers of ambient tones lend a warm, narcotic buzz to songs based in acoustic strumming. By the end of “Del Rey Mar,” the sound swells beyond capacity. It’s a long way from home for former dancefloor faves John Cep and Kim Field of Soundpool. Joining up with Tobacco of Black Moth Super Rainbow and live drummers EJ DeCoske and Johnny Lancia, they’ve achieved a mesmerizing world of sound, where a slow, deliberate super-fuzzed guitar breaks through the haze of “Undone.” Field’s vocals capture the ethereal sensitivity once solely the property of 4AD Records in the '80s. However, where some 4AD groups matched such vocals with wispy music, most of The Stargazer Lilies’ approach is to turn the amps beyond the level where ears bleed. “Endless Days” could be a pop song heard underwater. The group keep their songs to a relatively concise length. There are no 15-minute trips to the other side. (Though, perhaps, those will be next.) For now, it’s bite-sized pieces.
