It’s not as famous as other rap works released in the banner year of 1993, but <i>Tha Triflin’ Album</i> holds up amazingly well. It is simultaneously heavy and free-flowing, and retains an exceptional feel for funk. Utilizing classic breaks by Funkadelic, the Meters, Lowell Fulson and the Crusaders, producer DJ Pooh makes highly crafted beats that hit one after another, like a smart DJ pulling out records at a party. At a time when the West Coast rap scene was becoming obsessed with cold gangsta posturing, King Tee showed it was possible to be hard, heavy, and still have a sense of humor. This is part of the reason why <i>Tha Triflin’ Album</i> still sounds fresh when other records from the era sound dated. While every song here is as fattening and satisfying as a country breakfast, special mention should be paid to “Got It Bad Y’All” and “Black Togetha Again,” the songs that introduced the rambunctious trio Tha Alcoholiks. The Liks’ malt-liquor mischief was the perfect complement to Tee’s rock-solid flow, and together they make <i>Tha Triflin’ Album</i> one of the great Saturday night albums of all time.
