Most things in the world may seem to change every time you turn around, but thankfully there are a few phenomena you can count on to remain consistent. As <i>Rev</i> reminds us, the fierce, fiery sound of Reverend Horton Heat is one of them. The Texan guitar demon's first recording for the Victory label packs plenty of the heat for which the rockin' Reverend is named, putting his trademark mix of surf music, garage rock, punk, and rockabilly (a blend better known as "psychobilly") straight across the plate. Heat and his hard-hitting band blaze through the swinging rockabilly of "My Hat," chase the devil's tail on a longboard with Dick Dale–in–hell surf rockers like "Chasing Rainbows" and "Victory Lap," and slip in some country twang on "Hardscrabble Woman." You can almost see the trail of burnt guitar picks and smoking strings receding in the background. It's a raw, rough-edged ride, but that's exactly what anyone enamored of the good Reverend's rock 'n' roll circus has come to adore and expect each time out.
