About
Miles Davis captains the <i>Cookin'</i> sessions, but this is really an all-star bop and blues blowing session. The interplay between Davis's elongated, wistful trumpet lines and Red Garland's dewy piano interjections on "My Funny Valentine" creates newly bittersweet take on the familiar ballad. Meanwhile, John Coltrane's deft sax showcase turns "Blues By Five" into a swaggering workout. Completing the lineup, Philly Joe Jones's rattling drumming and Paul Chambers' relentless, pulsing bass riffs underscore the hazy and mystical "Airegin."
