About

Originally released in 1996, this is The Chemical Brothers’ debut mix album—recorded live at legendary London sweatbox, The Social, and is a perfect crystallization of Tom Rowlands’ and Ed Simons’ pulse-pounding, face-melting DJ sensibilities. There are booming, visceral nods to the big beat style the pair would soon come to pioneer, but what cuts through is the energy of the set (something consistent with most Social nights through the ’90s) and a refusal to accept traditional genre boundaries. Punishing hip-hop trades blows with baggy UK indie, freaky robo-dance, and acid jazz to create one of the most important DJ sets of the decade.
