About
This three-track, 36-minute album from the Melbourne, Australia–based instrumental trio Krakatau lets the bass, organ-synth, and drums expand as necessary. Considered a psychedelic rock trio by some, Krakatau wander from space rock–type atmospherics to prog-based challenges. “Riddells Creek” flows from a meditative origin into a cogent interlocking puzzle of rhythm and riffs. “All Water Near a Bridge” brings the sounds back to a gentle burble that slowly builds to a pronounced web of intricate synth and organ sounds, leaving bass and drums with little to pursue. In its seventh minute, the sound takes a cleansing shift that continues to surprise with its modesty. The longest cut, “Kuriere,” again builds at a leisurely pace, taking several minutes at a time to evolve to its next state of being. Into the fourth minute, suggestions of melody appear. At the seventh minute, the rhythm picks up and brings the song to further plateaus. There's no sense of “jamming” to these tracks; there's a feeling of maintaining the aura for as long as it takes. Arguably, these tracks could expand into hours of performance.
