<i>The Whole Shebang</i> provided a fine introduction to the harmonizing prowess of sisters Kristyn, Kelsi and Kassidy Osborn, who combined the sparkling energy of the Dixie Chicks with the sensuous charge of Shania Twain. Its songs (mostly written by Kristyn) radiate a Middle American feminism that blends a streak of independence with a hunger for traditional commitment. The sassy side of the trio is well expressed in “Little Good-Byes” and “Lucky 4 You (Tonight I’m Just Me),” as catchy a pair of boyfriend put-downs as anyone could hope to hear. “Punishment” and “Without Your Love” expose SHeDAISY’s vulnerable side, while “Dancing With Angels” conjures up the mystical aspects of romance. On songs like “’Cause I Like It That Way” and “Before Me and You,” the breezy vocal interchange between the Osborn sisters is given free reign. While country/pop is the flavor of choice here, an element of sultry Southern R&B pulses through “This Womans Needs” and “A Night to Remember.” Though they’ve enjoyed further success over the years, SHeDAISY can be heard at their freshest and feistiest on <i>The Whole Shebang</i>.
