About
Once you've wrestled with the cute but tongue-tripping name, you might be surprised to find a gut-punching, bulldozing bit o' rock 'n' roll on Hey Everyone instead of … well, maybe you were expecting a band with trombone, glockenspiels, and singers with polka-dot bows in their hair? This five-piece "fight-pop" outfit (its term, not ours) from Glasgow draws inspiration from bands like Fugazi and Pavement, working hard to balance pummeling energy with mosh-fist-mosh yowl (repeat) hooks, white space between the angular tempo shifts, and no small amount of dark, pointed humor. The early single "Totally Bone" is a distinct standout, with shout-alongs, a delicious guitar riff, and an always-irresistible "ba ba ba ba ba ba." The second single, "Some Dresses," also delivers a hook you can grab onto, albeit a jagged-edged one. There are softer moments (like the cool "Black Wax," a tune snagged for a FIFA football videogame) and harder ones (like the raging, throat ripping "One Chance"). There's something for everyone, except maybe Grandma.
