About
Large Professor was one of the most sought-after New York hip-hop producers of the early ‘90s, and along with DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Diamond D, and a handful of others, he filled the power vacuum that had been left by the gradual dissolution of the Cold Chillin’ label. Professor helmed Main Source’s Breakin’ Atoms and contributed to classics like Nas’ Illmatic and A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauder, so when the singles “I Just Wanna Chill” and “The Mad Scientist” hit the streets in 1996, heads got excited for Large Professor’s solo debut. Executives at Geffen shelved that album, titled simply The LP. Though murky bootlegs circulated among fans for years, The LP didn’t see official release for more than a decade, and it's gained a reputation as one of hip-hop’s great lost albums. Its long-delayed appearance is certainly cause for celebration, and its best moments are the equal of any of Large Professor’s better-known works.
