About

Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough) is a return to the tight, hard, classic rock that established Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers as one of rock ’n’ roll’s most dependable groups. Their previous album, Southern Accents, had featured the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart as a co-collaborator on songwriting, multi-instruments and production, and included an extensive list of guests, while Let Me Up is just the five of them, with guitarist Mike Campbell coproducing alongside Petty and cowriting five of the album’s 11 songs. The single “Jammin’ Me” was written by Petty, Campbell, and Bob Dylan, who’d used The Heartbreakers as his backing band for a 1986 tour. The remainder of the album is reminiscent of Long After Dark, the band’s other solid album filled with underrated tracks. “Runaway Trains” sparks a somber but pretty mood. “The Damage You’ve Done” reflects a Dylan influence. Campbell strikes up the mandolin for “It’ll All Work Out” and acts as the band’s key instrumentalist, handling dulcimer, Dobro, ukulele, slide guitar, 12-string, and even bass guitar.
