About

Wave On Wave marks Pat Green’s initial attempt to square the ornery independence of Texas-style country with the commercial demands of Nashville. In the process, he ends up with something reminiscent of ‘80s-era John Mellencamp – not surprising, considering that John’s old studio partner Don Gehman produced this album. Tracks like “California,” “Guy Like Me” and “All the Good Things Fade Away” move with an All-American sort of swagger while Green plays the down-home philosopher in the expansive “Poetry” and gets a tad weird in the rambling “If I Was the Devil.” He enlists Willie Nelson for vocal support on “Elvis,” a playful slice of small-town observation. The title track is the sort of joyful heartland anthem that sounds great blasting from a car stereo. Green’s yelping growl of a voice is his greatest asset, lending even an unremarkable lyric an extra dash of urgency. Wave On Wave may not have the maverick flair of Pat’s earlier albums, but it earns points for its mix of Nashville craft and Lone Star grit.
