Since their 2006 debut, <i>Robbers & Cowards</i>, Cold War Kids have become increasingly focused studio perfectionists; their sound tightens with each release. With erstwhile Modest Mouse members Dann Gallucci (guitar) and Joe Plummer (drums) in the mix, the band's sound is bold, muscular, and polished on its fifth album. With its outsized chorus and "We Will Rock You" beat, "First" is ready for arenas, while "All This Could Be Yours" is a barrelhouse rocker with a sing-along hook. The second half is more subdued, from the U2-worthy "Nights & Weekends" to the forlorn ballad "Harold Bloom."
