Before adopting his Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker, Will Oldham operated under the Palace banner for years. Here, he revisits that early lo-fi material, giving it a trad-country makeover aided by a stable of Nashville session vets. Oldham’s voice has become deeper and huskier since his ‘90s days, giving a stately calm to dark, fiddle-laden tunes like “More Brother Rides.” The gritty folk ballad “I Am a Cinematographer,” on the other hand, gets rebooted as a full-on Western square dance.
