About
The penultimate Split Enz album to feature founding singer/songwriter Tim Finn was the New Zealand band's most mature statement up to that time. Without drastically changing their approach, they sanded off some of their new wave edges in favor of a more traditionally melodic pop-rock approach. The downright funky syncopation of "Dirty Creature" and "Never Ceases to Amaze Me" introduced a visceral quality that was new for these art-poppers. The Enz still retain their quirky side though, and on "Six Months in a Leaky Boat"—one of the band's biggest hits—they achieve the ideal balance between musical left turns and emotion-stirring lyrics.
