About

Like the mythic character referenced in its title, Ulysses roams far with an adventuresome spirit. Current Swell use their fifth album to explore stomping folk (the title tune), dreamy stoner balladry (“Who’s with Us”), and raucous garage rock (“Sideways”) while capturing a stubborn honesty in their lyrics. Band leaders Scott Stanton and David Lang keep the sound rough-edged as they tear into the country-style blues of “Rollin’” and dip into the psychedelia of “Man of Maps.” Crunchy as a gravel road and tender as a fresh bruise, Ulysses is a very satisfying effort from the British Columbia combo.
