About
They work in Athens, Ga., hail from the Philadelphia music scene, and mention "flatlands" in the title of their second album, but Young Statues sound much more like the album’s cover, which in its grey tones suggests the classic Euro-sounds of Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, and other proponents of rainy-day music. Young Statues keep their American accents, but their beautiful ways with synths (“Further Away”) and vague but suggestive atmospheres (“Flood”) steer the sounds toward the emotional complexity of a band like Future Islands on “Natives” and “Run the River Dry.” The additional production juice lets the band achieve their ultimate sound.
