Putting her training in both classical and jazz guitar to good use, Quebec singer/songwriter Diane Tell perfects a sophisticated take on traditional chanson on <i>En flèche</i>. She rifles gleefully through pop sources as far-flung as the juicy jazz-<i>samba</i> of “Maître en parologie” and the Euro-meets-South Beach poolside wiggle that is “Miami.” And if the vibe often calls to mind Steely Dan at their coolest, Tell also pulls out all the stops on a few dramatic ballads, letting her perfect enunciation play off the smoldering arrangement on “Si j'étais un homme.”
