About
Nothing But Love introduced U.S. audiences to this unstintingly wholesome Canadian family trio. Thanks to the sentimental storyline of “26 (Cents Sign),” the Wilkinsons became a familiar presence on country radio for years to come. It’s true that these tracks are mostly cheerful, undemanding fare. But even the grouchiest country fan can’t help but acknowledge the luster of the Wilkinsons’ harmonies, as well as Steve’s sure grasp on songwriting essentials. Sixteen- year-old Amanda proves herself a precocious lead vocalist, suggesting a young Wynonna Judd with her bluesy phrasing and small-town charm. She celebrates teen romance in the buoyant “Fly” and “Boy Oh Boy,” then laments parental interference in the wistful “Williamstown.” Her most spirited moment comes in “The Yodelin’ Blues,” spurred on by some tasty acoustic guitar and piano backup. Fourteen year-old Tyler explores the pangs of first love on “The Word” and “Don’t I Have a Heart.” Dad also has his moment to shine on the lilting “One Faithful Heart.” When it works, Nothing But Love captures old-fashioned innocence with winning sincerity.
