About
Dionne Warwick’s third album (her second released in 1964) is as willowy and sexy as she appears on the album’s cover. As well as producing the album, gifted song architects Burt Bacharach and Hal David penned most of the tunes here. The impeccable, tube-glow recordings capture each subtle nuance and inflection in Warwick’s voice. It's as effortless-sounding as the songs—and the strings and brass that support them. On “People,” Warwick's voice becomes another breathy instrument, one with the French horn and lilting strings, and her delivery’s so perfect on the classic “Wishin’ and Hopin’” that you actually believe she’s the misguided young protagonist. Besides being the second most charting female vocalist ever (behind Aretha Franklin), Warwick is a jazz singer and a pop crooner whose dynamic vocal range (and restraint) is utterly unimpeachable. Every song on Make Way for Dionne Warwick is a timeless, beautifully executed stunner.
