About
Rodrigo y Gabriela's first album of new material in five years, 9 Dead Alive features the dynamic acoustic guitar duo playing face-to-face at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Each song celebrates an individual who's passed on, from 19th-century luthier/guitarist Antonio de Torres Jurado (“The Soundmaker”) to Harriet Tubman (“Misty Moses”) to Fyodor Dostoyevsky (“The Russian Messenger”). Though it’s said that the duo attempted to bypass their Latin influence and focus on their love for rock (their roots were in heavy metal), 9 Dead Alive feels like an intriguing mix of all their influences, creating instrumental music that can't be pigeonholed into any one genre. Their intensity and top-level musicianship continues to mesmerize crowds the world over, and anyone attempting to dissect the beauty and intricacy of “Somnuim” (inspired by 17th-century writer/feminist/nun Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz) is in for a tough challenge. Exceptional!
