As Slowdive's Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell reconvened as Mojave 3, their sound took a turn toward the emerging alt-country scene, with a touch of western loneliness casting an aura over these delicate tracks of mellow-eyed beauty. The band's shoegaze roots can still be discerned in the laidback gait and fuzzy ambience. Drummer Ian McCutcheon plays with restraint and with brushes, while the pianos and guitars join the harmonies for tunes that merge country's slide guitars with an Anglophile's sense of melody. They may have reached the desert, but it's raining. Neither Halsted nor Goswell were ready to handle the sun, so tunes such as "Love Songs on the Radio" and "Tomorrow's Taken" reflect the storm clouds and melancholia of their drizzling melodies. Pianist Christopher Andrews keeps the cowboy hopefuls grounded in the parlor, where they imagine what it must be like outside. It creates music that owes a debt only to a few diverse influences. The Red House Painters–like "Candle Song 3" and the Leonard Cohen–inspired "You're Beautiful" prove that Mojave 3 has miles to go before it sleeps.
