About

Inspired by a zany mix of British invasion and New Wave bands (The Zombies, Devo), Hot Hot Heat helped kick off the retro-rock revival of the early '00s with this debut. Juiced by frisky keyboards and spiked with blasts of punk, Make Up is anchored by "Bandages," a shimmying rocker that sounds like a dance party crossed with a game show. But the album is as erudite as it is fun: "This Town" borrows the mod stylings of The Jam, and "Aveda" has a sleazy Rolling Stones vibe.
