About
Faron Young was one of a number of aspiring country musicians who began their careers as sidemen for the great Webb Pierce as he toured the country fair and hayride circuit around Pierce’s storied Shreveport stomping grounds. In 1952 Young was signed to Capitol Records where he would become famous as “The Hillbilly Heart Throb” cutting whiskey-soaked tunes of love and loss and cultivating a salacious onstage persona that influenced many future rock ‘n’ roll stars. 20th Century Masters presents the listener with a small but well chosen selection of some of Faron Young’s best work. Though it largely ignores Young’s formative years at Capitol, during which he cut a number of fine, rockabilly-influenced sides like the immortal, “Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young” the album provides a fine portrait of Young as a mature country crooner and selections like the mournful “Leavin and Sayin’ Goodbye” and the rowdy “Wine Me Up” will delight even those averse to country with their clever arrangements and fine songwriting. 20th Century Masters is a good introduction to the work of the great Faron Young.
