About

Todd Rundgren has always had his ear to the ground. It's entirely possible he sensed a cultural shift coming when Utopia eschewed their earlier prog tendencies for more concise tunes with a tougher edge on this album, released the same month as The Sex Pistols' game-changing debut. Utopia weren't playing punk or new wave, but there are definitely power pop elements at hand in the accessible, harmony-laden, hook-heavy arrangements here. And hard-rocking, willfully bratty tunes like "Gangrene" couldn't be further removed from the epic art-rock suites of Utopia's previous album. Oops! Wrong Planet is one of rock's most intriguing about-faces.
