Though it's often overshadowed by the albums that bookend it (1980’s <i>Metal Rendez-Vous</i> and 1983’s <i>Headhunter</i>, both of which were big hits in the U.S. and Britain), <i>Hardware</i> boasts some of Krokus’ best songwriting and playing. In particular, “Celebration” exemplifies the group’s ability to add a pop sheen to grinding riffs inspired by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The band kept warding off persistent AC/DC comparisons—no doubt strengthened by the fact that Krokus' Marc Storace was invited to audition to replace Bon Scott after the legendary AC/DC frontman’s death in 1980. But there’s no denying the power and passion of “East Rocker,” “She’s Got Everything,” and “Mad Racket.” If you like your rock ‘n’ roll unapologetically vulgar (and really, who doesn’t?), then proceed directly to “Smelly Nelly,” in which an unwashed street urchin is praised as a sex object. Meanwhile, the band’s more atmospheric side is shown on “Winning Man.” But the best song might be “Rock City,” which has such a caustic, relentless riff that it echoes the damaged punk screeds of Black Flag.
