About
Emotions In Motion ran with the momentum of Don’t Say No and its hits, “The Stroke” and “My Kinda Lover,” firmly established Billy Squier as a legitimate star after more than a decade of trying. Squier wanted to be a rock star and his songs reflect that desire to live that life. “Everybody Wants You” revels in his newfound fame, even as it casts doubts about its merits. The title track adds a slinky funk. But it’s the blast-out dynamism of “Learn How to Live” that cements this album as one of the essentials of early-‘80s hard rock. The guitars slash while Squier delivers a knockout hook. “In Your Eyes” is Squier’s idea of a ballad: gentle, acoustic and always ready to ramp up the electricity and volume. It’s Squier’s great humanism that separates him from the many hard rockers who came to pose. He knows all the standard riffs and his band turn them inside out with ease for “Keep Me Satisfied,” “It Keeps You Rockin’” and the Stones-like roll of “Catch 22,” but he sings with genuine compassion and emotional depth.
