About

Trumpeter Chris Botti made a few intriguing choices with A Thousand Kisses Deep, his fifth studio album. The melancholy title track was an under-appreciated new Leonard Cohen song when it was recorded. “The Last Three Minutes” is an unlikely songwriting collaboration between Burt Bacharach and Dr. Dre, which here features both cool textures and an urbane swagger. Botti also tackles an old-fashioned standard (“My Funny Valentine”) and a pop classic (the Bacharach-Hal David song “The Look of Love,” here with a modern arrangement and pathos-filled singing by Chantal Kreviazuk). There’s some undercover funk on “Do It in Luxury,” which features the rare inclusion of a saxophone by tenor man Bob Shephard. The dreamy and seductive “Ever Since We Met,” boosted by singer Bridget Benenate, is exquisitely unforgettable.
