The American flag flies at half-mast throughout these Southern-rock ruminations on the gun violence, racism, and immigration problems coloring life in these not-so-united States. The Truckers' 11th album cuts to the quick with Patterson Hood's "What It Means," an acoustic protest song about the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. And it revs up considerably in "Surrender Under Protest," concerning a Confederacy that refuses to die, and through the tough Chuck Berry riff that rocks the hard-partying evangelists lambasted in "Kinky Hypocrite."
