About

Though not very well-known in the U.S., Matthew Good is a longtime fixture on the Canadian rock scene. In 2011, he won a Juno for his many years of toil. Arrows of Desire is counted as his 13th album, and it features the type of guitar-heavy, melodic rock that showed up on the lighter end of the alt-rock revolution of the early '90s, when Good performed with The Matthew Good Band. It’s hard to imagine a fan of fellow Canadian rocker Bryan Adams not also liking the hooks and grandeur of “Arrows of Desire,” “Via Dolorosa,” or “We’re Long Gone.” These songs have a no-nonsense MOR/AOR vibe to them; they sound like what The Wallflowers might have been like if they’d preferred loud, distorted guitars over a more refined and clean guitar-organ approach. “So Close” has a beautiful rock ‘n’ roll grandeur worthy of post-Springsteen bands such as The Gaslight Anthem. The emotionally true “Letters in Wartime” is a powerful closer.
