About

Back Home was released in November 1970 on Chess Records, catalogue LPS 1550. Marking his official return to his original creative "home" after a three-year stint with Mercury Records, the album attempted to bridge his classic 1950s rock and roll roots with a heavier, contemporary production. The tracklist consisted entirely of new compositions, mixing traditional chugging guitar rhythms with a modern, blues-heavy inflection. The release was anchored by the single "Tulane," a vivid storytelling track adapting his classic style to a late-1960s counterculture setting. This return established a vital second phase for Berry at Chess Records, setting the stage for the massive commercial resurgence he would achieve just two years later.
