About
Irish guitar luminary Gary Moore played with everyone from Skid Row (the '70s blues-rock band) and Thin Lizzy to Traveling Wilburys and B.B. King. So it only makes sense that his first solo album—1978’s Back on the Streets—sounds just as musically nomadic. He opens with the power-rock title track, which sounds as if Phil Lynott could have written it. Moore follows this with the smoky ballad “Don’t Believe a Word.” It sounds even more like a Thin Lizzy tune, but that’s because Phil Lynott actually wrote this one. He also played bass on it, alongside Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey; both appear on three other songs here. And that's great, because any Thin Lizzy fan who can’t get enough of the band’s limited output can consider this the next best thing. From here the genre journey starts, as “Fanatical Fascists” dabbles in punk-charged pub rock before “Flight of the Snow Moose” explores prog-fusion. “Song for Donna” even hoists the sails of yacht rock. But what remains a constant throughout is Moore's incredible guitar playing.
