Buffalo Springfield's rangy debut provides the template for the folk-rock movement that followed. Songs like the Neil Young–sung "Burned" and "Out of My Mind" are wiry and grim, while Stephen Stills puts a more mellow, Beatles-inflected spin on "Sit Down I Think I Love You" and "Everybody's Wrong," achieving a compelling push-pull that reflected the band's motley membership. But Stills' masterful, album-opening "For What It's Worth" stands apart, fusing electric and acoustic instrumentation with strident politics for a timeless rallying cry of youth culture.
