For years, Chris Tomlin has brought his talents to worship-based projects like Passion as well as his solo endeavors. His ability to place his passions and messages in the framework of guitar-based pop songs is displayed with verve on <i>Burning Lights</i>. Songs like "Awake My Soul" and "Lay Me Down" sound like the work of post–"With or Without You" U2 or Coldplay in their pleading deliveries and sky-scraping arrangements. "God's Great Dance Floor" is a tasteful, guitar-driven number that uses a house music pulse in an organic setting. Tomlin is first and foremost a deliverer of messages of faith, and his purest moments (on songs like the piano-and-vocal "Shepherd Boy") are also some of the album's best.
