About
With the addition of new singer-guitarist Joe Wood, Southern California’s T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty) successfully began the shift away from hardcore skate-punk and towards a dark, mainstream punk vision more in line with the creepy brooding of the Doors. The band would further shift towards metal in future years, but for Change Today? T.S.O.L. hit the right balance between all genres, recording one of the finest albums of the mid-‘80s. “Blackmagic” begins things with Wood’s goth-inspired vocals kept in line by a muscular, guitar-led attack. “Just Like Me,” “In Time” and “American Zone” exhibit the band’s solid songwriting and flawless playing as bassist Mike Roche dominates the sound with a melodic and gripping presence. It’s the weave, however, between “Red Shadows” and “Flowers By the Door” that creates a climax of heart-stopping proportions. Here, the songs take their gothic-Doors visions and create a drama worthy of Jim Morrison. This addition adds four tracks, including the tribal “Road of Gold” and the jazzy shuffle of “Suppose They Give a War And No One Comes.”
