From the switch-hittin' G-Funk of Dr. Dre to the freaky-styley punk-funk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, George Clinton's P-Funk posse blew more than a few musical minds when they rolled into <i>Chocolate City</i> armed with Bootsy Collins' bacon-fat basslines and Bernie Worrell's slow-swirlin' synths. Not that we doubted the cosmic genius behind <i>Up For The Down Stroke</i>, but the nine nasty neighborhoods composing the can-you-dig-it? utopia served notice that the funk was no fluke. And if you're not hip to what the City's all about, Clinton lays down a State of the Union-style rap before launching into his full-frontal funk assault, "Ride On," "If It Don't Fit (Don't Force It)," and "Big Footin'" emerging as three of the most enduring anthems of the era. And don't even think Parliament couldn't bring it back down for the ladies, turning out a Stylistics-worthy knees-weaker with "I Misjudged You."
