About
Chuck Berry in Memphis was released in September 1967 on Mercury Records, catalogue SR 61123. Marking his official debut for the new label, the album was recorded at the historic Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Backed by a versatile horn section and seasoned local session musicians, the record captured a noticeably more soulful, contemporary rhythm and blues sound than his previous guitar-driven releases. The record was the result of a brisk three-day session in March 1967 and marked Berry's first chance to record new material for Mercury. It followed his inaugural release for the label, Golden Hits, which was born out of Mercury's desire to own its own versions of his classic catalog, while also capitalizing on the growing industry trend toward modern stereo re-recordings.
