About
Anyone who’d seen The Tragically Hip live could tell singer Gord Downie was a much stranger cat than the band’s anthemic arena rock let on. On his solo debut, he lets that freak flag fly proudly, using the accordion-wheezed opener “Starpainters” as a litmus test to challenge casual Hip seekers. But <i>Coke Machine Glow</i> proves to be a casual, at times irreverent set of sepia-toned folk rock: “Trick Rider” finds Downie harmonizing gorgeously with collaborator Julie Doiron; the charming “Chancellor” soothes its crestfallen narrator with a gentle saloon-door sway and playful piano lines that trickle through the song like a spilled drink.
