In 1968, American singer-songwriter Shawn Phillips recorded a suite of material he had written while living in Positano in Italy. Recorded in London, UK, with Steve Winwood on keyboards, Chris Wood on saxophone and flute, and Jim Capaldi on drums (all of Traffic), plus other musicians, the material was intended as a trilogy of albums. No record company in Europe was willing to commit to such an ambitious body of work by a then unknown artist, and the material languished for more than two years, until Phillips met producer Jonathan Weston who took the work to A&M Records. Eventually, A&M decided, too, that a trilogy of albums was unfeasible and took just the songs and put these on a single album - Phillips’s A&M debut album," Contribution". The remaining material, except for a couple of tracks, was subsequently released as "Second Contribution". A third album for A&M, "Collaboration", was released in 1971, with subsequent albums following.
