About
Sumo was an Argentine alternative rock band formed in 1982 that blended post-punk with reggae. Over the year, its success and trajectory made it, along with Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota and Soda Stereo, one of the most influential bands in Argentine rock. Sumo is credited with introducing British post-punk to the Argentine scene, featuring many English lyrics and providing a visceral counterpoint to the influences of progressive rock and nueva canción that were dominant in Spanish-language rock at the time. After the death of Luca Prodan in 1987, the group split into two bands: Divididos (with Diego Arnedo and Ricardo Mollo) and Las Pelotas (with Germán Daffunchio and Alejandro Sokol). .
