If you've ever witnessed traditional Zulu dance-that exuberant interplay of combative kicks, leaps, stomps, and twirls-you already know what <i>Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World</i> sounds like. An expression of hope, love, and promise, the third album from Johnny Clegg and Savuka feels like the best moments in life. From the age of 14, Clegg, a white South African, broke the laws of apartheid, sneaking into quarantined areas to train with Zulu tribesmen in their intricate guitar styles. Risking prison or worse, he formed the nation's first interracial band, Juluka, and later expanded his sound, forming the larger, still racially integrated ensemble, Savuka (which translates as"We have arisen"). Mixing Zulu traditional music with pop sensibilities, the album's stunning songs veer from political ("One (Hu)Man, One Vote" "Bombs Away") to strikingly romantic ("Dela" "Woman Be My Country"). The songs glisten with a complex, energetic blend of guitars, concertina, mouth bow, percussion, harmonies, and more against Clegg's urgent yawlp of a voice. Combined, it's a celebratory dance to the music of life.
