About
Known for his ceaseless inventiveness on the microphone, Burro Banton’s machine-gun delivery and lyrical dexterity won him the moniker Nonstop Talker when he began chatting in the early ‘80s. Though Banton made a number of excellent rub-a-dub recordings during this period, he didn’t gain commercial traction until the early ‘90s, when he joined fellow Stereo Mars veteran Super Cat on the Wild Apache label. The incendiary single “BoomWaDis” was the first product of this new association, and its aggressive lyrics and hard-hitting digital rhythm produced by Steelie and Clevie won Banton a legion of new fans. Banton quickly returned to the studio to capitalize on this success. Many of the singles he recorded over the next few years turned up on Original Banton, the incredibly consistent Bobby Konders–produced full-length that appeared on the Massive B imprint in 1995. This album is a triumph of mid-‘90s ragga and dancehall, and it includes everything from the traditional rub-a-dub of “Gunman” to the digital badman sounds of “Gangster” and even a handful of excellent remixes designed to cross over to a hip-hop audience.
