About

An early collaborator of UK rap-rave crew Shut Up and Dance and trip-hop legends Massive Attack, Nicolette captures ’90s breakbeat culture in all its anarchic glory on her 1997 <i>DJ-Kicks</i> mix, the sixth in the series. Jungle and drum ’n’ bass form the foundation of her set: Cuts from Doc Scott, Roni Size, and DJ Krust keep the energy rolling in waves of subs and snares. But unexpected tempo shifts periodically tug the rug out, while bursts of ambient and noise—Palace of Pleasure’s droning “Migrant,” Aphex Twin’s distorted “Ventolin (Salbutamol Mix)”—further unsettle the mood. There are even forays into hardcore techno and rave, offset by Nicolette’s own eerie style of singing. Originally spread across two full CDs, the two-hour set makes for a thrilling tour of rave’s fringes at a time when dance music was still radically amorphous and unpredictable.
