The creation of the 1973 album DonatoDeodato is one of the most fascinating and unusual stories in the history of Brazilian jazz-funk.
The project began when keyboardist João Donato entered in New York City to record a series of sparse, atmospheric backing tracks on a Fender Rhodes electric piano.
Legend has it that Donato, who mostly wanted some quick cash to fund a trip back to Brazil, simply laid down these rough musical ideas, left the tapes, and abruptly boarded a flight home without finalizing anything.
With an unfinished album on their hands, the record label turned to arranger and conductor Eumir Deodato, who was riding a massive wave of international commercial success at the time. Deodato was tasked with a monumental rescue mission: decoding Donato's skeletal ideas and transforming them into fully realized compositions. He set to work writing the missing melodies, arranging heavy horn sections, and hiring a stellar lineup of session musicians. This hand-picked band included jazz and Latin legends like percussionist Airto Moreira, conguero Ray Barretto, trumpeter Randy Brecker, and bassist Wilbur Bascomb.
Although Deodato's sleek, groove-heavy arrangements resulted in a cult classic filled with infectious jazz-funk tracks like "Whistle Stop," the final outcome deeply displeased João Donato. Upon hearing the completed record, Donato felt that Deodato's commercial production style and the addition of aggressive brass arrangements stripped his music of its original, minimalist essence. This artistic dissatisfaction led to a sharp disagreement between the two master musicians, casting a dramatic shadow over what is now celebrated as a stellar fusion masterpiece.
