About
Hilltop Hoods’ sixth studio album may have been their third in a row to top the ARIA charts, but it’s no feel-good victory lap. Rather, 2012’s Drinking from the Sun is a sustained meditation on the highs and lows of the Adelaide, Australia, rap trio’s success up to that point. Over far-reaching samples courtesy of DJ Debris and expansive touches like strings and horns, MCs Pressure and Suffa reflect on their sudden international recognition from a variety of angles. Opener “The Thirst, Pt. 1” mentions being away from home and losing relationships after touring internationally behind 2009’s State of the Art, while “The Underground” celebrates their hard-fought graduation from house parties to festival stages over a twanging vocal snippet of The Mamas & The Papas’ Cass Elliot. Some of the act’s most commanding overseas peers show up here: The Roots’ Black Thought tears freely into “Living in Bunkers,” and Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na lends his signature gravity to “Speaking in Tongues." Closer to home, fellow Adelaide native Sia supplies a quirky art-pop hook for “I Love It." Along with 2014’s Walking Under the Stars, this album was reimagined in 2016 alongside the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra—pushing its already epic scope to even loftier heights.
