Mariah Carey’s sparkling second album pairs big ballads with feather-light soul-pop. The joyous title track gets a touch of divine inspiration from gospel-inspired backing vocals; the strutting “Make It Happen” positions her as a ‘90s disco queen. Carey further cements her diva status on the album’s ballads; “If It’s Over,” which she cowrote with pop tunesmith Carole King, is a slow-build lament inspired by ‘60s R&B, while the searching “Can’t Let Go” shows how she can use her instrument’s softer side to arresting effect.
