On his first new album in five years, this veteran singer/songwriter’s latest work doesn’t skimp on hooks even as it offers hard-earned wisdom with a pinch of humor. With partner Bill Lloyd and on his own, Foster has always been gifted at reworking classic country motifs into something immediate and personal. Recorded in a former brothel deep in the Louisiana bayou, <i>Everything…</i> touches on a range of life experiences in ways that are both contemporary and timeless. “Hard Light of Day,” “California,” and “Talk Myself Out of Falling” are steeped in bittersweet romance and delivered with a Southwestern melodic tinge. “Mine Until the Morning” (a duet with Patty Griffin) is an especially poignant vignette of fleeting love. “Whose Heart You Wreck (Ode to the Muse)” considers the fickle nature of inspiration, while “Not in My House” speaks loudly against bigotry and “Unh, Unh, Unh” gets playfully sexy in tandem with singer Sarah Buxton.
