About
The '60s were a time of tremendous growth for rock ’n’ roll and songwriters alike. Many British bands (along with Americans like The Beach Boys and Bob Dylan) pushed the envelope with each new release. Main Kinks songwriter Ray Davies was as competitive as any of them, and he took the advancements made on <i>The Kink Kontroversy</i> and turned them into a complete album of human nature studies. Songs here like “Rainy Day in June,” “A House in the Country,” “Holiday in Waikiki,” “Most Exclusive Residence for Sale," and “Little Miss Queen of Darkness” went where few pop-rock songs were going, both lyrically and musically, as Davies exposed his penchant for vaudeville and English music hall. This “expanded version” of the album adds the fan favorites “I’m Not Like Everybody Else,” “Dead End Street," and “Big Black Smoke.” It has since grown on U.S. fans, and it's rightfully considered essential.
