About

It’s helpful that TJ Cowgill enlisted producer Bill Rieflin for his 2014 King Dude project, Fear. Rieflin’s experience with Ministry and Swans makes him the perfect co-conspirator when looking to make music with grand gothic intent. That Fear immediately succeeds with the low-key and romantic “Maria” is the best sign yet that Cowgill isn’t content with turning King Dude into a cartoon of devilish proportions but rather seeking to expand his range of influences. “Devil Eyes” and “Bloody Mirror” work with blues and country, finding connections between The Gun Club, Nick Cave, and other rockers who've explored this territory. This Seattle-based songwriter is locked in throughout Fear, having composed some of his strongest material to date. “Cloven Hooves (Of Fear),” “Demon Caller Number 9," and “Lay Down in Bedlam” all explore the intricacies involved in making viscerally powerful music, proving that a bit of careful planning beforehand can enhance the spontaneous moments in the recording studio.
