About
Following up the live recordings Escape the Flames and Alive in the East?, the London duo of tenor/soprano saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd return to the studio for the aptly titled Feeding the Machine. Joining them is Max Luthert on live tape loops and electronics, adding layers of sonic detailing and real-time response to the heady mix. The groove is strong—Boyd’s presence ensures that—and yet the hovering harmonics, mystery-filled chord drones, and glitchy sound manipulation put Feeding the Machine on something of a more abstract plane. Golding’s tenor is meaty and information-rich on “Asynchronous Intervals,” and his soprano tone on the closing “Because Because” is almost reminiscent of a wood flute or far-off alphorn. Luthert’s tweaking of the tenor licks on “Accelerometer Overdose” makes Golding seem like he’s replicating himself ad infinitum, like Agent Smith in The Matrix.
